The Improved Literacy in South Sudan (ILSS) project is empowering 750 adults, primarily women aged 15 to 35, in the Luyari and Rego communities of Terekeka. Over three years, participants will gain essential reading, writing, and numeracy skills through adult education classes held in local churches. Using both Arabic and English, classes are designed to fit around participants’ daily responsibilities, meeting three times a week with interactive activities like storytelling, group discussions, debates, and presentations.
Beyond adult literacy, the project encourages parents to advocate for their children’s education, with a focus on increasing school enrolment for girls. Five learning centres will be established, supported by trained facilitators and local leaders. Partnerships with community organizations, churches, and education-focused agencies ensure the project’s sustainability, with continuous monitoring and support from African Enterprise South Sudan and AE International. By equipping adults with literacy skills, the program opens doors to greater educational and economic opportunities while fostering stronger, more empowered communities.
