With one of the world’s lowest literacy rates, South Sudan needs your support. Many young women are forced to drop out of schools, or are not even given the opportunity to start. We believe that addressing illiteracy amongst young women is a crucial step toward life transformation, which is why African Enterprise launched the Improved Literacy Project.
By equipping women with basic literacy skills, we can help break the cycle of poverty, empower families, and foster lasting peace in a post-conflict society.
In 2024, over 80% of participants learned to read and write in their native Bari language. Recognised by the Ministry of Education, the program continues to inspire wide community interest in learning, with many men and children showing a new interest in the program.
Your support can:
- Equip 750 women with basic reading and writing skills over three years, including learning material and support from trained facilitators
- Expand access to literacy education for women by establishing five new learning centres
- Promote healing and advocacy by empowering women to support their families and participate in community peace building
Her story:
As someone living with a disability, Santina Kaku never had the chance to go to school. But everything changed when African Enterprise started a literacy class at her church. “I didn’t know much before because I couldn’t read,” she shares. “Now I can read and write, and give thanks for the school in the church in Gwolukuk.”
