The Nyawonhle (“Beautiful Feet”) Shoe Repair Project empowers unemployed men in Copesville township, Pietermaritzburg, by providing practical training in shoe repair and basic business skills. Participants learn techniques such as sole repair, heel replacement, and stitching, equipping them to seek employment in the shoe repair industry or start their own small businesses.
Launched by African Enterprise South Africa with support from AE Australia, the project addresses unemployment and the skills gaps in a community challenged by limited education and economic opportunity. Trainees also develop creativity and confidence by transforming worn shoes into wearable items, which they can sell or donate locally. Graduates receive starter packs to begin their own ventures, with ongoing mentorship for three months to support their success.
The program runs annually, training 12 groups of 10 men each over the year, helping hundreds of men gain marketable skills and contribute to the economic resilience of their families and community.
